The Purse Project: Kate Collier

What does my purse say about me? Let’s start with why I have Vera Bradley purse.

1-vera

Because it’s a colorful floral; all those pockets keep me organized; the strap is cross-body; and the bag weighs next to nothing. I also love the whole idea of two women turning a good product idea into a thriving business that benefits breast cancer research.

2-cards-lipbalm-eyedrops_edited-1

The matching zippered pouch holds delicious lip balm to prevent chapped lips and eyedrops to soothe my dry eyes. Why suffer when I want to take a walk on the lakeshore on a cold windy day?  Or when I can’t tear myself away from a writing session? The pouch also hides my loyalty cards. I recently added the black one, for MacKimmee’s on Church Street in Lenox, MA, where I finally found a simple black alpaca sweater, warm enough for the coldest days, dressy enough for dinner, and lightweight enough to carry in a weekend bag.

Two other cards are neither credit cards nor loyalty cards. The one on the left is an appointment card; that’s my acupuncturist’s office, which was originally the Trolley Barn for my town. The lime green card? That’s for Sonnenberg, an impressive mansion in my town. I love walking the grounds, meditating in the Japanese Garden, smelling the roses in the formal garden, and taking pictures of the changing landscape as the seasons unfold. The fabric pencil box was made by a cousin who is both a romance author and a talented craftsperson. Even though I do all my writing on my laptop, I’m lost out in the world without sharpened pencils (with erasers, please!) to jot ideas and write notes.

These items are obvious: a bookmark for my romance series, a business card for my mystery series, a B&N coupon, a hair clip, and mouthwash. Those in the know recognize the anniversary coin from a 12-step program (29 years and counting!). But what in heaven’s name is the teeny old man hugging his knees and wearing a quirky cap? That’s a Piskie from Cornwall.  I don’t leave home without that Piskie, and I don’t let anyone see me rubbing it for good luck.

5-fig-cleanser-pick-handcream

Ah, more items that are always in my purse: a pick to tame wind damage after a walk, hand sanitizer, nourishing lotion for my hands, and yummy gluten free fig newtons.

6-smartkey

Finally, the one item that’s so valuable it has to be pinned to the inside of my purse: the smartkey to my hybrid vehicle. I love my Prius, which is pushing 100,000 miles and still getting 48+ mpg. You’re thinking, cars come with two keys, don’t they? Yes, and mine did, too. But somehow I lost one key during a trip to Ireland, the trip before I got the Cornish Piskie.

Mooning

Today is National Moon Day.

2013-11-15 18.24.07

Forty-seven years ago, two the first Earthlings landed on their moon.

We Earthlings have always been fascinated by our moon.

Shakespeare wrote “Rise up, beautiful sun, and kill the envious moon. The moon is already sick and pale with grief because you, Juliet, her maid, are more beautiful than she.”

Buddha said: “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”

And there’s always this from George Carlin: “There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.”

The moon plays a prominent role in the lives of my werewolves. Image credit: pancaketom / 123RF Stock Photo

Moon artwork abounds.

And I love songs about the moon.

Here are my top five moon-related songs:

5) Harvest Moon (Neil Young)

4) Dancing In the Moonlight (King Harvest)

3) Moonshadow (Cat Stevens)

2) Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

1) Moondance (Van Morrison)

Do you have a favorite song about the moon?

Weird Collections

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever collected?

My daughter made a rubber band ball.

At one point in my unexciting childhood, I collected the tags from Tetley Tea Bags. I believe the brand was Tetley. The tags were printed with clever sayings. The one I remember–and still quote–is “To make a long story short adds six words.”

Nowadays I collect and share the sayings from my Yogi tea bags.

How about you? What odd thing have you collected?

Purse Project: Gayle Callen

Hello, and thanks for having me stop by, MJ! My purse is a utilitarian bag for me—as evidenced by its basic look. It only has to function well and hold up for a few years. I don’t change my purse, even for the seasons (although I will use a cute little cocktail party purse as necessary). But 95% of the time, this is it!

GaylePurse

Notice the lovely pocket on the right side for my phone—there’s actually one on each side of the purse, which I love! Gotta be able to reach the phone quickly, right?

In the many zipper pockets (a necessity), I put things like lip gloss (at least two kinds!), paper, pens, tissues, gum, and reading glasses.

GayleMisc

Inside the main body of my purse, you can find my wallet, a nice long one. It has to fit I.D., money, credit cards, those endless store reward cards, and some photos (although that’s just by habit, since now I have a phone for those!). Let’s not forget the library card, of course!

I also carry a small makeup bag, but instead of make-up, it has things like a little plastic container for ibuprofen, band-aids, cough drops, and hand lotion. I’m a mom—people always expect me to have everything, even though my kids are grown.

I’m an author, too, so I carry autographed-copy stickers in case I spot my books in the wild. Instead of business cards, I started carrying postcards years ago, with the covers on the front (I write historical romance as Gayle Callen and contemporary romance as Emma Cane) and on the back, a brief book blurb along with my website addresses. Then people can see exactly what I write and have a way to contact me.

GaylePostcards

Last but not least, is this little handy device. Can you guess what it is? It’s a purse hanger! You know, when you go to a restaurant, and you don’t want to set your purse on the floor, because…just because. Very handy.

So thanks for taking a peek into my life!

Gayle’s latest release, The Groom Wore Plaid, is available at Amazon.

TheGroomWorePlaidExcerpt

Maggie McCallum’s dreams about her new fiancé aren’t the romantic sort. After being bartered to Owen Duff like a piece of property, she’s also haunted by premonitions of his death on their upcoming wedding day. Yet the exasperating Highlander won’t let her call it off, even though his life and clan are both in jeopardy.

Owen has wanted Maggie in his bed since he first glimpsed her years ago. If their union restores peace between neighbors, so much the better. But Owen is falling deeply in love with the one woman he cannot hope to claim…and survive.
