WIP Wednesday: Danica St. Como

This month’s Work-In-Progress Wednesday guest is Danica St. Como.

Welcome Danica!

Today is National Grammar Day. What are your top 3 grammatical pet peeves?

DSC: While I don’t profess to be a grammar maven, my own bugbears include:

Homophones: I get a little nuts when I read a passage in which words are used incorrectly—even “big name” authors who one would assume have topnotch editors. Words such as rein, rain, reign. Your and you’re (you are). They seem like simple issues, but the wrong word can definitely take the reader out of the moment.

Word combinations such as had had and have to. “She’d [she had] had to make the trip.”  Why not simply, “She had to make the trip.”? Have to… What does “I have to go shopping” really mean? “I must go, I need to go, I should go, I want to go…” To have something means possession, in a sense: “I have a dollar.”

The ubiquitous “and.” In truth, my sentences tend to run on—it’s something I need to rein in. However, some authors seem to believe that if they add an “and” every so often, that seventeen-line sentence will be just fine. I’m not referring to doing it on purpose, for effect, but to adding the little “and” bugger everywhere.

MJ: MARCH is also National Literacy Month. Do you take literacy levels into account when you write?

DSC: Not necessarily literacy levels, as such. However, if my beta readers have an issue with a passage, I take a second look to see if my wording might be out of place/time for my targeted audience—my responses (silly TV commercials from times gone by, movie quotes from less-than-blockbuster movies, etc.) may not be understood by a younger crowd. Phrases from childhood that are really made-up words with no association to the rest of humanity (or readers), may cause a reader to think, “huh?”

MJ: If you didn’t write, what would be your creative outlet?

DSC: I was a freelance ceramist, years ago. I would be tempted to work with clay and paint again.

MJ: Other than writing, what would be your dream job? Why?

DSC: Traveling, and being paid for it. I love to drive.

MJ: Describe your ideal/dream writing space.

DSC: If it weren’t for the books and boxes and stacks of paper crowding me, I actually have the most wonderful, open, airy office, with four large windows. My daughter’s suggestion for “rearranging” my office requires the use of a snow shovel, an open window, and a Dumpster on the other side that open window. What do you think she’s trying to say?

MJ: What do you love most about your WIP hero?

DSC: He’s a realist, but also hopeful that he can have a future with the woman he loves. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to convince her.

MJ: What do you least like about your WIP heroine?

DSC: She can be somewhat snarky on occasion.

MJ: What genre is your current WIP?

DSC: Contemporary erotic romance/suspense.

MJ: How did you come up with your hero and heroine’s names?

DSC: When I develop a character, first I decide on a “look,” and an ethnic ancestry. Then I begin to research names until I find one that calls to me. I look up the meaning of that name, decide whether it suits the character. I’d decided early in the story’s development that my heroine was Irish, Abigail O’Connell, my hero Italian, Niccolo “Nico” Ferrari. The Irish gal, Abigail O’Connell, was introduced in earlier books. She was a pivotal character in Above the Law, but needed her own story.

MJ: How did you choose the setting for your current WIP?

DSC: Saving Nico is the sixth book of the Men of Sanctuary series. All the stories revolve around a training camp, Sanctuary, located in western Maine, run by two retired Marines and their woman, a federal agent. Maine can be unbelievably beautiful, but also rugged and dangerous. I thought it was a suitable setting for a training camp that caters to military and civilian clients.

MJ: Can you tell us about your current work in progress?

DSC: Here’s the blurb for Saving Nico [Men of Sanctuary 6: Saving Nico]

Game Warden Abigail O’Connell moved from upstate New York to Maine after the death of her fiancé, Marine spotter Pietro Galletti. While babysitting at the Sanctuary lodge for her friends, Marine scout sniper Nico Ferrari arrives under secretive circumstances. Hot lust blooms, throwing the pair together—but Nico can’t, won’t, admit to Abby that her fiancé was his spotter, and he watched him die in Iraq. He also won’t admit that he fell in love with Abigail through Pietro’s letters and photos, and never expected to find her in western omigod Maine. When the truth does come out, Abby is devastated for more than one reason.

MJ: And what is the title of your current release, and where can readers purchase it?

DSC: Aloha Man [Men of Sanctuary 5: Aloha Man] can be purchased at the Loose Id website or from Amazon.

AlohaMan_Cover

MJ: And how can readers keep up with your busy publishing schedule?

DSC: I have a website, a blog, and a Facebook page.

MJ: Thanks again for joining me, and best of luck with your books!

WIP Wednesday: Melissa Snark

This month’s guest author is the always delightful Melissa Snark.

MelissaSnark author photo for book

MJ: Welcome, Melissa. If you didn’t write, what would be your creative outlet?

MS: That’s difficult to say since I’m really bad at all other types of art. Think I’m kidding? I’m tone deaf and so off-key that even my four-year-old daughter begs me not to sing. I can’t draw a straight line and buttons pop right off. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have a creative outlet if I couldn’t write. I’d just content myself with being a reader and living in other people’s fantasy worlds.

MJ: Describe your ideal/dream writing space.

MS: An isolated beach cabin with panoramic views. Directly adjacent to a Peet’s coffee shop. With a built in teleporter so I could return home at the end of the day w/o the commute.

MJ: What do you love most about your WIP hero?

MS: His wit. Logan is completely sarcastic and pretty damn funny.

MJ: What do you least like about your WIP heroine?

MS: There is no heroine. I’m not writing romance.

MJ: What genre is your current WIP?

MS: Folklore Fantasy / Urban Fantasy

MJ: Will you share the first few sentences of your current work-in-progress?

MS: Yes. This is from The Trickster.

The strains of braying hounds soared into the night sky, raised high on the steadily gusting wind. The rays of May’s Full Flower Moon busted the howls into pieces, so broken refrains crashed to the earth. Those soulful notes fell upon the slopes of the mountains, and occasionally became trapped in the rocky crags.

Breathing heavily with exertion, the lanky young man broke free of the forest, escaping the clinging fingers of trees determined to restrain him in branchy embrace. He charged up a sharp embankment, running on uneven rocks. The texture of the ground changed beneath his feet, growing hard and even, and he stumbled at the unexpected difference.

Stopping, he glanced down at the black surface and realization sprang upon him. A road. In the distance, the hounds sang out again and his attention jerked toward his pursuers. The hunters were gaining ground. Being run down by humans rankled. His ego which protested the impossibility. No man alive could run down a werewolf, even on two legs. At the same time, he couldn’t deny the truth his own ears reported.

MJ: And what is your current release?

MS: Battle Cry, which can be purchased from Amazon, B&N, ARe, Kobo, iTunes, Google Play, and Scribd.

Battle Cry 750

MJ: And how can readers stay in touch with you.

MS:  my website, The SnarkologyFacebook Author Page; Twitter: @MelissaSnarkGoodreads;  Amazon Author Page

MJ: Thanks again for joining me, and good luck with your books!

WIP Wednesday: Alee Drake

Welcome to a new season of Work In Progress Wednesday. Today’s guest is my good friend Alee Drake. Welcome ALee!  January is National Hobby Month—what’s your hobby? How did you start?

AD: My hobby is writing and reading. I started to love reading in first grade when my teacher read Charlotte’s Web to the class…I was the only one who cried when Charlotte died. I wanted to be able to tell a story that would make readers either laugh or cry.

MJ: January is also National Soup Month—what’s your favorite soup? Do you make it yourself?

AD: My favorite soup is split pea with ham but my mother always called it ham soup, because I didn’t like peas when I was young. Yes, I make my own after a ham dinner, and a dinner of scalloped potatoes and ham….

MJ: If you didn’t write, what would be your creative outlet?

AD: Gardening is my spring/summer outlet. I would probably make primitive things, or jewelry, or be a photographer… (too many things to do, so little time).

MJ: Other than writing, what would be your dream job? Why?

AD: My dream job would be teaching children to become creative writers…OH, I did that already (I am a retired elementary library teacher). I guess it would be to have a cozy writer’s retreat/ bed and breakfast. (I currently host writers retreats at my home.) I am living my dream.

MJ: Describe your ideal/dream writing space.

AD: My office is my dream writing space. I have windows overlooking acres of fields and trees, with birds and deer . I write at an antique half-circle desk.

MJ: What do you love most about your WIP hero?

AD: He is wealthy and handsome and is totally down-to-earth.

MJ: What do you least like about your WIP heroine?

AD: She doesn’t have confidence in herself.

MJ: What genre is your current WIP?

AD: Sweet romance.

MJ: How did you come up with your hero and heroine’s names?

AD: I like names that are unusual and reflect the character’s personality.  My Hero is Zayne and the heroine is Keely. My other characters are named after friends and family.

MJ: How did you choose the setting for your current WIP?

AD: So far my books take place in upstate NY.  I have one book that starts out in a freezing wintery upstate NY setting and ends in Hawaii.

MJ: Are you willing to share the first five to ten sentences of your current work in progress?

AD: Yes. This is from His Birthday Suit.

“Mother, I don’t dress up.  I wear jeans. You know that.  Now drop it.” Zayn Roberts stood beside the wet bar in his parents newly renovated parlor and tipped his head back to swallow the last dregs of Jack Daniels. He was tempted to pour himself another glass but refrained knowing it would be harder to stop after two and he had to drive home. Soon.
“Dear, don’t be so obstinate. You know that you have to be presentable at the party.”
“Seriously, Mother. I know everyone who will attend, and they know I only wear jeans.”
“Yes. And won’t it be lovely to surprise them by wearing a tailored suit.”
He crossed the room and gently touched his mother’s shoulder.“Mother, what have you got up your lovely silk sleeve? I sense something deviant…something that definitely will not please me.”
MJ: I understand you had a book released earlier this month.
AD: Yes, Men In Ts by Alee Drake is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and The Wild Rose Press website.
MJ: And how can readers stay current with you?
AD: My blog, my Facebook page, and my Amazon author page.
MJ: Thanks again for joining me today!

WIP Wednesday: Taryn Elliott

Today I’m delighted to host author Taryn Elliott for Work In Progress Wednesday. Taryn, what are your top three dream destinations and why?

TE: Hawaii – hello…it’s Hawaii. Ireland – went once and wanted to immediately figure out a way to live there forever. San Francisco – I’ve been completely intrigued by that city for years.

MJ: What is the top book on your TBR pile?

TE: PRISONER – Skye Warren & Annika Martin.

MJ: If you didn’t write, what would be your creative outlet?

TE: #1 would be graphics and design, but since I actually get to do that because of writing…I’ll say jewelry design. I used to love to do it, but there never seemed to be a decent return on it for selling my work.

MJ: Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

TE: Hair tie – I have wild, long hair and I’m always sticking it up.

MJ: What do you normally eat for breakfast, or do you skip it and get straight to work?

TE: Depends on my level of sleep deprivation. I normally like a little sausage egg and cheese scramble.

MJ: Describe your ideal/dream writing space.

TE: A tower with one big, circular desk that I can have all set up for writing, research and design. And the perfect chair that is made for me and my shortness. LOL!

MJ: Name 3 things on your desk right now.

TE: Charger for my phone, Bose speakers for my tunes, and about 5 fruit snack wrappers.

MJ: Do you listen to music when you write? Explain.

TE: YES!! I make a Spotify playlist for every story.

MJ: Do you collage your story before writing? Explain.

TE: Yes, I have a Pinterest board for all my books. All my chars have pix and clothes and setting pictures. As well as a few inspirational ones. Ahem.

MJ: I know what that Ahem means. What do you love most about your WIP hero?

TE: Logan King has an amazing capacity to love – even with all the trouble following him around, he is falling hard for Izzy. I love that protective instinct in him.

MJ: What genre is your current WIP?

TE: Sexy Romantic Suspense.

MJ: How did you chose the setting for your current WIP?

TE: I love upstate NY. But I have a crap sense of direction – so I didn’t want to make any mistakes. So I created my town and have allllll of the control. Muahaha.

MJ: LOL! Okay, now it’s time for the lightning round! Addams Family or The Munsters?

TE: Addams Family

MJ: Stephanie Plum or Eve Dallas?

TE: Eve Dallas!!!!

WIP Wednesday: Nicki Greenwood

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Nicki Greenwood to Work In Progress Wednesday. Nicki, what are your top three dream destinations and why?

NG: 1) England. Maybe I’m just hoping to run into Benedict Cumberbatch. 2) Ireland. My family has some roots there, and I love places with an “old soul.” 3) Australia. Because it’s just that awesome.

MJ: What is the top book on your TBR pile?

NG: Reading it now: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.  by Diana Gabaldon. With the arrival of Outlander on Starz, I’ve finally caught up with the series. This book is one of her best!

MJ: If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be and why?

NG: I’m finally at a good enough point in my life to say I’m happy being me. I’m doing the things I always said I was going to do—mainly, writing books!

MJ: What a great attitude! Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version of the story?

NG: The Horse Whisperer, by Nicholas Evans. Totally unsatisfying ending. The movie, while still heart-wrenching, is at least satisfying.

MJ: What do you normally eat for breakfast, or do you skip it and get straight to work?

NG: I’ll wolf down a breakfast sandwich and chug an iced coffee, and then it’s off to work for me.

MJ: Describe your ideal/dream writing space.

NG: My office, but with Hugh Jackman as a personal assistant. 😀

MJ: As long as you keep your hands off Henry Cavill–who is mine–you can have whomever you like as an assistant. Name 3 things on your desk right now.

NG: You mean there’s a desk under all this paper? (Besides the paper, I have my ever-present Chap Stick and a stuffed Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. *grin*)

MJ: Do you listen to music when you write? Explain.

NG: Most of the time. I will compile a soundtrack for my books, and play it incessantly as I write the book. If I hear an inspiring song for a particular scene, I put it on repeat while I write. Occasionally, I have books that refuse to be written to music. Then, I just use the songs to get the spark going, and turn off the iPod during writing time.

MJ: What is your favorite genre to read?

NG: Historicals, oddly enough. I love to read them, but the idea of writing one is just mind-boggling.

MJ: How did you chose the setting for your current WIP?

NG: I knew from the start of the series that it would be Vermont. The book “decided” it would be autumn, since Vermont in autumn is just breathtaking.

MJ: Now it’s time for the lightning round. Wine-red or white?

NG: For drinking, either, as long as it’s a semi-sweet. For cooking, either, and as dry as I can get it.

MJ: Cinco de Mayo or St. Patrick’s Day?

NG: St. Patrick’s Day, unless I’m at Salsarita’s on Cinco de Mayo.

MJ: Last movie you saw in a theater?

NG: How to Train Your Dragon 2

MJ: Favorite TV show?

NG: NCIS, The Walking Dead, and Once Upon a Time.

MJ: Coke or Pepsi?

NG: Pepsi.

MJ: And for the main course! Please share the first few sentences of your current work in progress.

NG: This is from Fire, book 3 of my Elemental Series.

“Mommy!  Mommy!

The pitiful scream hardly reached Ethan Sutter’s ears under the roar of a flame-induced whirlwind.  He held up an arm to shield his face and strengthen the protective bubble of power surrounding his body.  His skin glowed, and the flames dampened, pushing in and then turning immediately back as though they’d hit an invisible breakwall.

Fire rushed up the wooden skeleton of the apartment building, devouring the structure, but unable to penetrate the protective sphere of his power.  “Kid, where are you?” he shouted.

MJ: Wow! That certainly left me hanging. You have a new book out now, Flashpoint,  from your Gifted Series. Where can readers purchase it?

Flashpoint_w8129_750

NG: Flashpoint is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and The Wild Rose Press.

MJ: And how can readers stay in touch with you?

NG: I can be reached through my website, my blog, my Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Goodreads, and YouTube.
