Mooning

Today is National Moon Day.

2013-11-15 18.24.07

Forty-seven years ago, two the first Earthlings landed on their moon.

We Earthlings have always been fascinated by our moon.

Shakespeare wrote “Rise up, beautiful sun, and kill the envious moon. The moon is already sick and pale with grief because you, Juliet, her maid, are more beautiful than she.”

Buddha said: “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”

And there’s always this from George Carlin: “There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.”

Moon artwork abounds.

And I love songs about the moon.

Here are my top five moon-related songs:

5) Harvest Moon (Neil Young)

4) Dancing In the Moonlight (King Harvest)

3) Moonshadow (Cat Stevens)

2) Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

1) Moondance (Van Morrison)

Do you have a favorite song about the moon?

Me Time

Lately I’ve felt overwhelmed. Too much to do and not enough time. Every day I murmur a prayer of thanksgiving because my children are grown and gone. If I were still doing the mom thing . . . I can’t even contemplate it.

It’s not all bad. I’m realizing my lifelong dream/ambition of being a published author. It’s the peripheral obligations that are getting me down.

One of my goals for this calendar year is a monthly date with myself. Too bad I haven’t had time to do that. I barely have time to get in a weekly session of yoga. My second quarter goal is to add another half hour of exercise into my week. But exercise isn’t me time. It’s a peripheral obligation that takes away from the writing time.

I’m in serious need of not only a date with myself, but some substantial me time.

  • I’d like to go to a baseball game.
  • I’d like to do some real cooking on the weekend.
  • I’d love to go to a movie with my husband.
  • I have several ideas for custom music mixes I’d like to work on.
  • Reading without guilt would be so nice!
  • I’d like to sip a glass of wine and relax when I get home from Day Job.

I would also like writing time. Writing is my dream. Something has to give.

Another one of my goals this year is “say no.” Don’t be surprised when you start hearing me say it more often.

Book That Band!

“Help!” author Emma Cane wrote to our brainstorming group. “I need names of bands for a music festival in my current work in progress!”

“I have a band in my book, Call of the Wilder, author Kris Fletcher responded. “They’d love the exposure!”

Then I said, “Oh! I have band in my book, Moonlight Serenade. Feel free to include my guys.”

“There’s a band you can use in Dream of Danger, too,” Maggie Shayne said.

Christine Wenger then reminded us of her band in  A Second Helping of Murder.

And that’s how it began.

When Emma Cane’s Sleigh Bells in Valentine Valley came out on Tuesday, October 28, each of the aforementioned bands were mentioned in the story.

So we’re having a contest! BOOK THAT BAND!.

Oh Canada

Several weeks ago, I started writing this blog as a tribute to my favorite Canadian musicians. The scary happenings north of the border this week skewed the timing.

I have a great affinity for our northern neighbor. My grandfather came from there (according to some family legends). I have many Canadian friends. My home town Triple A baseball team was affiliated with Toronto for three decades. The Canadian flag still flies at the ball park. I’m not fond of hockey, snow, or cold, but I adore Canadian musicians.

My personal music collection is filled with:

  • Neil Young
  • Joni Mitchell
  • Gordon Lightfoot
  • Kate & Anna McGarrigle
  • Terri Clark
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Loreena McKennitt
  • Michael Buble
  • Robbie Robertson

My children grew up listening to Raffi. I’ve been exposed to Arrogant Worms and the Guess Who.

Here’s to Canada!
